The Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 8 conducted a Regional Variety Planning Pre-Workshop focusing on rice variety recommendations for the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) Seed Program and the DA National Rice Program, in Tacloban City on January 19, 2026.
The activity aimed to ensure that the rice varieties distributed to farmers are proven to be high-yielding and well-suited to the agro-climatic conditions of Eastern Visayas, thereby improving productivity and farm income.
The consolidated variety recommendations generated during the activity will be formally submitted to the DA National Office for consideration and possible adoption in the 2027 implementation of the RCEF Seed Program and the National Rice Program.
This initiative serves as a critical preparatory step in aligning national seed distribution strategies with regional realities. By refining variety recommendations ahead of the planting season, DA Region 8 aims to intensify the effectiveness of government seed interventions under both RCEF and the National Rice Program.
The pre-workshop brought together key stakeholders, including millers, seed growers, traders, provincial rice program coordinators, and municipal agriculturists to review existing variety recommendations and assess their performance in different areas of the region. Through technical discussions and data review, participants evaluated varietal adaptability, yield potential, pest and disease resistance, and farmers’ preferences.
Ultimately, the activity underscores DA Region 8’s commitment to inclusive and evidence-based planning, and responsive program implementation, ensuring that farmers receive high-quality seeds that contribute to sustainable rice production and food security in the region.
